OCZ ProXStream 1000W Power Supply Review PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 March 2007
With power requirements ever increasing, manufacturs are attempting to provide power that is clean, stable and plentiful. While not an easy task, OCZ have come up with their solution, the ProXStream 1000W Power Supply. We strap it into our test system and put it through a battery of tests.

Nobody can deny the excellent performance we get out of our systems today, nor the visually stunning eye candy. But it takes alot of juice to power the various components and with those components getting more and more powerful, they require more and more juice.

Introduction

With the introduction of SLI video cards, the power requirements went up a great deal, fear not, as the power supply manufacturers struck back with 1000 watt power supplies. However, with these new poer supplies came one major drawback that many have suffered. Their size, the majority of todays 1000 watt or higher power supplies increased in depth by up to 2 inches. Major case manufacturers are just now starting to re-design the inner workings on their chassis, but until then you'd have to either purchase a new case or revert back to your lesser wattage power supply.

Thanks to OCZ, this is no longer the case. They have introduced the OCZ ProXStream Power Supply, 1000 watts of juice and strict adherance to todays ATX size specifications. We are going to strap this bad boy to our test bed and run it through it's paces. Hopefully, we'll be pleasantly suprised by the results.

Initial Testing & Results (OCZ ProXStream 1000W)

In order to provide accurate test results, we monitored the voltage output of the various rails for a continuous 60 minutes. During this time, the voltage was recorded in 5 minute intervals.

Please also be aware that while the graphs show fluctuation, the scale of the graphs are at a focused level. Refer to the graph axis labels.

Our first test is with our lab system at idle, we measured the 3.3V, 5.0V and 12V rails and the results are demonstrated below.

Secondly, we put the system at maximum stress. As a game that uses todays computers to it's fullest, we used Supreme Commander as our test method. We fired up a game with a large custom map (60Kx60K), used a modified configuration file to allow no unit limit and then used a trainer to gain 2000 units per side and then engaged in a length battle. This resulted in a dramatic system slow down and a subsequent slideshow, however both our cores were being used to their fullest and both video cards were running quite hot.

As you can see, the results were quite impressive. Now the graphs show fluctuation but the actual values are so little that they are still well within safe ranges.
